- Student Membership: Individuals who are undergraduate students will be eligible for Student Membership in the Society, if he/she is engaged in the study of Biochemistry or Molecular Biology in any tertiary institution recognized for the purpose by the Society. A Student Member shall have all the rights and privileges of an active member as designated by the Society except the right to vote or hold office. Student status must be certified by the Head of Department or any senior staff of the Institution who is an active member of the Society. The individual must hold a valid student ID card. Student members may remain in this status for a maximum of five years.
- Graduate Membership: Graduate Membership is open to any individual who is unemployed Graduate Student, Postgraduate Students and whose application is endorsed by a mentor or Faculty member who attests to the interest of the candidate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Graduate members may not vote, hold elective office, nominate new members, or sponsor papers by non-members at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society. Graduate members are eligible for automatic upgrade to Associate Membership by certifying that they have attained the necessary qualifications. Graduate members may remain in this status for a maximum of five years.
- Affiliate Membership: Affiliate Membership is open to individuals, associations, agencies or organizations that support the mission and aims of the Society but not eligible for Full or Associate Membership because they do not have a degree (or equivalent) in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. These include individuals with degree in any Life Science, Basic Medical or Medical Science that are related to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Such individuals would typically include those working in government or non-governmental or non-profit organizations and members of the public with a strong interest in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Affiliate Members shall enjoy all privileges of Full Membership, except holding elective office, voting right, endorsing new members and sponsoring papers for non-members at the Annual Scientific Meeting. An Affiliate Member may be upgraded to Full Membership upon acquisition of appropriate qualification(s) (i.e. a degree in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology).
- Associate Membership: Associate membership shall be open to non-graduates of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Individuals with degree in any Life Science, Basic Medical or Medical Science that are related to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology such as Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Physiology, Anatomy, Zoology, Botany etc) but have contributed to the objectives of the Society and/or have obtained a postgraduate degree in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology (or equivalent) will be eligible for Associate Membership in the Society. Associate members shall enjoy all privileges of full Membership, except holding elective office, right to vote, endorsing new members and sponsoring papers for non-members at the Annual Scientific Meeting. This class cannot be upgraded to Full Membership except upon presentation of a degree or postgraduate certification in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology.
- Honorary Membership: This category of membership shall consist of individuals that have contributed significantly to the objectives and growth of the Society. Admission to honorary Membership would be by invitation of the Society. Such members may be invited to attend Society Meetings as observers but may not vote and such attendance shall not be at the expense of the Society. Honorary Membership shall remain valid indefinitely subject to the approval of the Society.
- Corporate Membership: Any Organization, Institution, Agency or Body which encourages the advancement of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology by active technical, financial and moral support for training, research and development in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology, shall be eligible to become a Corporate Member. Such a Corporate Member shall enjoy all rights and privileges of an active member.
- Early Career Membership: The category is a Full Membership and open to graduates of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology who are employed on Grade Levels 7-10. This includes Graduate Assistant (GA), Assistant Lecturer (AL), Lecturer II (L2), Research Officer II (RO2), Research Officer I (RO1) and Senior Research Officer (SRO) etc. Early Career Member shall enjoy all privileges as Full Membership, such as holding elective office, right to vote, endorsing new members and sponsoring papers for non-members at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- Mid Career Membership: The category is a Full Membership and open to graduates of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology who are employed on Grade Levels 11-13. This includes Lecturer I (L1), Senior Lecturer (SL), Principal Research Officer (PRO) and Chief Research Officer (CRO) etc. Mid Career Member shall enjoy all privileges as Full Membership, such as holding elective office, right to vote, endorsing new members, and sponsoring papers for non-members at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- Senior Career Membership: The category is a Full Membership, open to graduates of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology who are employed on Grade Levels 14-17. This includes Associate Professor, (Assoc. Prof./, Reader; Professor (Prof); Deputy Director (DD); and Director (D) etc. Senior Career Member shall enjoy all privileges as Full Membership, such as holding elective office, right to vote, endorsing new members, and sponsoring papers for non-member at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- Fellow Membership: This category of membership is awarded to distinguished members of the Society upon recommendations from National Executive Council through the College of Fellows in view of their contributions to the Society. The individual would be considered to have met the stipulated requirements for such award. Such person who in addition to satisfying the conditions for membership must:
- Have distinguished himself/herself in the teaching, research and/or professional application of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology;
- Have had at least ten (10) years professional experience in his/her field after satisfying the minimum conditions of membership;
- Have reached a position of seniority, experience and authority in his/her career;
- Have been an active member in good financial standing for a continuous period of at least ten (10) years;
- Have been a registered member for a minimum period of ten (10) years preceding the application;
- Have attended three (3) consecutive Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society prior to the application.
- Requirements (i) – (vi) may be waived for Honorary Fellows.
Applicant must be cleared by the Membership Screening Committee and approved by the National Executive Council before the award can be conferred on the individual and inducted to join the College of Fellows. A Fellow shall enjoy all privileges of full membership, such as holding elective office, right to vote, endorsing new members and sponsoring papers for non-members at the Annual Scientific Meeting.Emeritus Membership: Any member (Biochemist/Molecular Biologist) of the Society in good standing who has retired from active employment because of disability, eligibility for retirement based on age or length of years of service may upon request and certification by the National Executive Council, be classed as a retired member. Retired members shall not pay membership fees or other assessments and shall retain all the rights and privileges of full dues paying members except that retired members shall not be eligible to hold elective office.
